When it comes to moving, choosing the right box size is more important than most people realize. The right boxes can help protect your belongings, make packing easier, and even save you money and hassle on moving day. But with so many box sizes to choose from, how do you know which is best?

Here are the three key things to consider when selecting a box size:

1. Item SizeThe first step is simple, look at the size of the item you’re packing.

  • Small items (like books, DVDs, or décor) can be grouped together in one box.

  • Medium items (like kitchenware or shoes) often fit well in medium-sized boxes.

  • Large or awkward items (like lampshades, blankets, or sporting equipment) may need their own box or even specialty cartons.

👉 Ask yourself: Can I safely pack multiple items in this box, or does it need to be boxed individually?

2. Item WeightWeight matters just as much as size. A box that’s too heavy is difficult to carry and more likely to break. Many heavy items in a box also runs the risk of crushing items in the box, and boxes that may be underneath it.

  • Heavy items (like books, dishes, or tools) should go in small boxes, even if they could physically fit in a larger one. Minimizing empty space is crucial for safety in transit!

  • Light items (like linens, pillows, or clothes) can go in larger boxes without a problem.

👉 A good rule of thumb: If you can barely lift it, it’s too big. Go with the smallest box that still comfortably fits the item, you’ll thank yourself later, and so will your movers.

3. Protection & WrappingThe last thing to think about is how much protection the item needs.

  • Fragile items like dishes, glassware, and collectibles require extra packing paper, bubble wrap, or foam.

  • When selecting a box, make sure there’s enough space for both the item and the padding around it.

  • Don’t overstuff—leave room for cushioning so your belongings stay safe in transit.

👉 Remember: It’s not just about fitting the item inside the box, it’s about fitting the protection too.

Final ThoughtsChoosing the right box size comes down to balancing size, weight, and protection. Pack heavy items in smaller boxes, use larger boxes for lightweight or bulky items, and always leave room for protective wrapping. With the right approach, your move will be smoother, your belongings will be safer, and your back (and movers!) will thank you.
