Important To Know For

Dorms & Apartments

Dorm room moves are often very quick and simple for our team to complete for you! There are a few things to keep in mind while preparing to move your college dorm

Dorms

1. Furniture and Assembly

Almost all residence halls (like IU’s McNutt, Purdue’s Cary Quad, or Butler’s Irvington) come fully furnished with a bed, desk, chair, and dresser. Moving is largely limited to clothes, tech, and "lofting" kits.

2. Move-In/Move-Out Windows

These universities use highly choreographed, 30-to-60-minute unloading windows. If you miss your slot at Purdue’s Honors College or Butler’s Fairview, you may be forced to wait until the end of the day to access the loading zone.

3. Utility Management

All utilities—water, electricity, high-speed campus Wi-Fi, and heat—are bundled into the housing contract. There is no need to "set up" or "transfer" services.

4. Trash & Debris Logistics

Universities provide massive, temporary industrial dumpsters specifically for move-in cardboard and move-out furniture. If there are items that cannot be placed in the dumpsters, or if you need assistance moving or hauling away unwanted items, our team is happy to help!

5. Parking and Accessibility

You are usually moving from a designated parking lot or a cordoned-off campus street. During peak times, it can be very difficult to get close access to unloading zones, and walking distances can be significantly increased. At times, it can also be very hard to maneuver large vehicles and trailers in congested areas.

When moving your student apartment, on-campus or off-campus, our team is here to make it a quick and easy process. For college apartments you will want to keep in mind the following

Apartments

1. Furniture and Assembly

Most off-campus housing in Bloomington or West Lafayette is unfurnished. This means moving day involves heavy lifting for sofas, bed frames, and dining tables.

  • Pro Tip: In older Midtown Indy houses near Butler, narrow doorways and steep "servant stairs" often make modern sectional sofas impossible to fit without disassembly.

2. Move-In/Move-Out Windows

Most leases in these college towns follow a strict August 1st or August 15th start date. Because thousands of students move on the exact same day, freight elevators in luxury buildings (like those on Kirkwood in Bloomington or near Chauncey Hill at Purdue) are often booked weeks in advance.

3. Utility Management

Students are responsible for setting up accounts with local providers (e.g., Duke Energy for Bloomington/West Lafayette, or AES/Citizens Energy for Indianapolis).

  • Note: Internet installation appointments in student heavy-zones during August can have wait times of 7–14 days, so booking the setup for your move-in date is essential.

4. Trash & Debris Logistics

Off-campus residents must follow city-specific trash codes.

Bloomington: Very strict on "bulk item" left on curbs; you often have to schedule a special pickup and pay a fee.

West Lafayette: Moving large amounts of cardboard to the curb at once can result in a citation if it isn't bundled according to city specs.

Butler/Indy: Many rentals utilize narrow alleys where trash trucks may refuse to pick up large piles of moving debris.

5. Parking and Accessibility

IU: Many off-campus apartments are on one-way streets with narrow parallel parking. Loading a 20-foot truck can easily block traffic, requiring a second person to "scout" or move the vehicle constantly.

Purdue: Many students live across the bridge in Lafayette where parking is easier, but those in West Lafayette proper often face "Permit Only" street parking that is aggressively enforced.

Butler: Most off-campus "senior houses" have gravel or grass parking pads in the back. During a rainy Indiana August, these can become mud traps for heavy moving vehicles.

  • The "Central Campus" Traffic Blockade
Bloomington restricts vehicle access to the heart of the IU campus (the "Old Crescent" area) from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. If your dorm or apartment is within this zone, moving trucks without a specific university waiver may be redirected or ticketed during business hours. During move-in and move-out weeks, traffic can also get VERY heavy and congested slowing down the moving process.

    Right-of-Way (ROW) Permits
Unlike a standard residential move, parking a moving truck or placing a portable storage container (like a POD) on a Bloomington city street requires a Right-of-Way Use permit. You must apply through the city's "Civic Access" portal at least several days in advance. Failure to do so often results in the truck being towed or heavy fines from the Engineering Department.

The "Hoosier to Hoosier" Hard Deadline
IU is strict about its move-out timeline (for 2026, the deadline is Saturday, May 9, at 10:00 AM). To manage the massive volume of waste, the university uses "Hoosier to Hoosier" donation bins. Leaving bulky items like futons or rugs in hallways or next to outdoor dumpsters instead of these bins can result in cleaning fees charged directly to your student bursar account.

  •
    The 30-Minute Loading Window
Purdue utilizes a highly regimented "Move-In Pass" system. For traditional residence halls, you are often limited to a 30-minute unloading window. If you do not have your pass printed and displayed on your dashboard, campus police may not allow your vehicle into the unloading zones near the dorms.

    2026 Construction & Trash Reset
Two major hurdles are unique to this year:

    • Infrastructure: Major widening projects on Soldiers Home Road are expected to cause significant traffic delays for students moving into north-campus apartments.

    • Trash Collection Reset: Starting in June 2026, West Lafayette is transitioning to a new 5-day curbside collection schedule. If you are moving out in late May or early June, verify your pickup day immediately, as the city has stated they will not send trucks back for missed pickups during this transition.

    "C" Permit Boundaries
For off-campus students, Purdue's parking boundaries are strictly enforced using License Plate Recognition (LPR). If your moving vehicle or a helper's car is parked in a "C" permit zone without registration, the ticket is often issued automatically by a scanning vehicle before you’ve even finished your first trip up the stairs.

  •

    The "No Elevator" Rule

A frequent surprise for Butler students in halls like Irvington House or Fairview House is that elevators are often deactivated for general use during move-in to prevent mechanical failure from overloading. Unless you have a documented accessibility need, be prepared to carry heavy furniture and trunks up several flights of stairs.

    Hinkle Fieldhouse Staging

Unlike IU or Purdue where you go straight to your dorm, Butler often requires a centralized check-in at the Hinkle Fieldhouse parking lot first. You receive your keys and your specific "unloading pass" there. Attempting to bypass this and go straight to your residence hall will usually result in you being turned away by campus safety.

    "Senior-Only" Off-Campus Logistics

Butler has a six-semester residency requirement, meaning most students moving into off-campus apartments are seniors. These apartments (often in the 46208 zip code) are frequently historic homes with narrow stairwells and tight alleyways. Large 26-foot moving trucks often cannot physically navigate the turns required to reach the back-door loading areas common in Midtown Indy.
